Student answer (Band 6.0)
Respected Sir,
I am writing this letter to show my interest in a part-time voluntary job, that is posted at the front gate of your museum. Because in couple of days my school vacation will start, so I am planning to join this work to gain some in hand experience which will benefits me in further future.
Furthermore, in school also I opted a subject related to the history; hence I already aware of some information related to past kingdoms and monuments. I think it will be helpful for this job. In addition, I have good communication and guiding tour skills.
As I am joining this work part time, so my availability will be 3 full days in a week that is Monday, Sunday, Friday. You can give me any shift as per your business requirement. I can do Morning, Afternoon and Evenings.
I hope you will take me in consideration and will give me this opportunity.
Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points required by the prompt: explaining your motivation, describing your skills, and providing your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, although the opening 'Respected Sir' is slightly unconventional for a museum application; 'Dear Sir or Madam' (as suggested in the prompt) or 'Dear Hiring Manager' would be more standard. The ideas are relevant, but the development is somewhat brief. To reach a higher band, you could expand on how your specific history knowledge or communication skills would be applied in a museum setting, such as assisting with guided tours or cataloging artifacts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'As I am', which help the reader follow your points. However, the progression between sentences can feel a bit mechanical. The transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs is clear, but the final paragraph is quite abrupt. To improve, ensure that your sentences flow more naturally into one another and avoid repetitive sentence structures, which will help create a more cohesive and professional tone throughout the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary', 'monuments', and 'business requirement'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'in hand experience' should be 'hands-on experience', and 'further future' is redundant. Additionally, 'opted a subject' is slightly unnatural; 'studied a subject' would be better. While your meaning is always clear, the vocabulary remains somewhat basic. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations related to professional applications and volunteering, which would elevate the overall quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For instance, 'that is posted' should be 'which is posted', and 'I already aware' is missing the verb 'am'. There are also issues with article usage and prepositions, such as 'in school also I opted a subject' (should be 'at school, I opted for a subject'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles will significantly improve your accuracy.
