Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear sir,

I am writing to express my keen interest in your voluntary job that is posted at your front gate. I will be happy to be part of your team. I want to join this part-time job in my upcoming vacations to gain some hand on experience and knowledge.

Currently, I am enrolled in History, Art and Cultural subject, through which I have gained information related to the monuments and arts, which can be helpful for this job. And also, I am good at communication and presentation skills.

My availability for this job is 3 full days in the week that are Monday, Friday and Wednesday. I am very flexible with shifts timings you can schedule me as per your business requirement. Also I want to request you if it is possible please inform my schedule a week prior to me, so I can plan rest of my days accordingly.

I hope you will consider my application and will give me this opportunity.

Thank you

Rose

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, outline your relevant academic background and communication skills, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific knowledge of 'monuments and arts' would benefit the museum's visitors, which would demonstrate a more thorough development of your ideas. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to your qualifications and finally to your availability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Currently' and 'Also' to link ideas. To improve, you could use a wider range of linking words or phrases to connect sentences more fluidly, such as 'Furthermore' or 'In addition to this,' rather than relying on simple conjunctions. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the different sections of the letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'keen interest,' 'enrolled,' and 'flexible.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'hand on experience' (should be 'hands-on') and 'inform my schedule' (should be 'confirm my schedule'). The vocabulary is functional and allows you to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band. Incorporating more sophisticated collocations related to professional applications would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'History, Art and Cultural subject' should be pluralized, and 'inform my schedule a week prior to me' is slightly awkward phrasing. There are also minor punctuation issues, such as missing commas after introductory phrases. Despite these errors, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining the structure of complex sentences to ensure they are error-free.
