Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for voluntary position at your museum. I very interested in history, art and culture, and I would like to gain more knowledge in depth practically while contributing to my local community. I believe working at the museum would give me an opportunity to learn about the exhibits and develop useful workplace skills.
I am friendly, responsible, and hardworking person, I enjoy communicating with people and I am comfortable working as part of a team. I am also organized, patient and willing to learn new things quickly. I believe these qualities would help me welcome visitors, answer their questions and assist museum staff with everyday tasks.
I am available to volunteer on weekend mornings from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. as well on Wednesday afternoons from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. I can be flexible if museum required help at other times.
I would be grateful if you would consider my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Your faithfully,
Alex Simpson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight relevant personal qualities such as being organized and patient, and provide specific availability for the role. The tone is appropriate for a formal application to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the letter follows the required structure, including the specified opening. To reach a higher band, you could provide a slightly more detailed example of how your skills have been applied in a previous context, but overall, the task is fully satisfied.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the prompt. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the purpose of the letter to personal attributes and finally to availability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'I am also' and 'I believe' to link sentences effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. The flow is smooth and easy to follow, though the use of more sophisticated linking words or transition phrases could further enhance the cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. Phrases like 'gain more knowledge in depth' and 'contributing to my local community' are well-chosen. However, there are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'voluntary position' (should be 'a voluntary position') and the slightly awkward phrasing 'if museum required help'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, incorporating a few more precise or less common collocations related to museum work or volunteering would elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. There are a few grammatical slips, such as the missing article in 'I am very interested' (should be 'I am very interested') and the comma splice in 'I am a friendly, responsible, and hardworking person, I enjoy communicating...'. Additionally, the closing 'Your faithfully' contains a minor error (should be 'Yours faithfully'). Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
