Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I Hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter for requesting you to give me an opportunity to do some Volunteering work at the Museum. I am a student of university and I am available for part time work. I saw a small banner near the museum saying they are looking for individuals who are interested to do unpaid work in their free time. The reason i want to do this work is that i want to gain hands on experience and for improving my skills.

I personally am very good at history. Therefore, I have few knowledge about the ancient things. I am also good at communication, arranging stuff and hard working. I will not give you any chance of complain and will try to give my best at work.

Usually, I have my classes from Monday to Wednesday so I am Unengaged at Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Any timing will work for me on this days. I would be glad if I have this opportunity.

I am looking forward for your response. I appreciate your time and consideration.

Yours Faithfully,

Kiya

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, list relevant skills such as communication and historical knowledge, and provide your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed; for instance, while you mention being 'good at history', providing a specific example of your interest or academic background would have strengthened the response. Overall, the task is fulfilled effectively, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the beginning.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a specific requirement of the prompt. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore' and 'However', though the range of linking words is somewhat limited. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the use of referencing could be more varied. Nevertheless, the paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the message well, ensuring the reader can navigate the information without difficulty.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'opportunity', 'consideration', and 'voluntary'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'few knowledge' (should be 'some knowledge') and 'unengaged' (which is not the most natural choice for availability). While you successfully convey your meaning, the vocabulary is somewhat basic and lacks the precision or variety that would characterize a higher band. Expanding your repertoire of collocations related to professional applications would be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this letter for requesting' (should be 'to request'), 'i' (which should always be capitalized), and 'on this days' (should be 'on these days'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring accuracy would help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.
