Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in the voluntary/unpaid work at the museum. I recently visited the museum and saw the notice at the bulletin board stating they are looking for unpaid/voluntary people, and I am writing because I want to be a part of the team.
To begin with, I would like to explain that I have to complete certain hours doing voluntary services to pass my curriculum . Unfortunately, I cannot work full-time as I have to attend school, which has caused me inconvenience in finding a part-time work.
Furthermore, I would really appreciate it if you could consider me for this position. I believe I am a good communicator, active learner and goal oriented. If possible, I would also be grateful if you could include me in other social activities too.
Finally, I would like to mention that I am available Monday to Friday after 6 p.m. and anytime on Saturday and Sunday. I sincerely hope you will look into this matter and take necessary action required at your earliest convenience.
Thank you for your time and consideration. I look forward to hearing for you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Pearl Sequeira.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation (completing curriculum requirements), outline your skills (communicator, active learner), and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, ensure that the development of ideas is more balanced; for instance, the explanation of your skills is quite brief. Expanding slightly on how your specific qualities, such as being 'goal-oriented,' would benefit the museum's operations would demonstrate a more thorough engagement with the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with,' 'Furthermore,' and 'Finally' to guide the reader through the text. While the structure is sound, the flow between sentences could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words or referencing techniques to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'express my interest,' 'voluntary services,' and 'at your earliest convenience.' However, the vocabulary is somewhat functional and lacks the precision or sophistication required for higher bands. There are minor issues with collocation, such as 'inconvenience in finding a part-time work' (should be 'difficulty finding part-time work'). To improve, try to incorporate more specific professional terminology related to volunteering or museum environments to show a broader lexical range.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is generally effective. Most of your sentences are clear and error-free, though there are a few slips, such as 'hearing for you' (should be 'hearing from you') and 'at the bulletin board' (should be 'on the bulletin board'). Your control of punctuation and tense is generally good. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate a wider variety of complex grammatical structures, such as conditional sentences or passive voice, while maintaining the high level of accuracy you have already established.
