Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing in respect of the opening at the museum for a part time/ voluntary role. I am an Archaeology student at the Open university and one way to keep myself engaged during the industrial strike action by the Body of Universities is to volunteer to gain experience.
I am passionate about artefacts, antiquarian costumes and gears and how they have survived several centuries. I will bring in my theoretical knowledge and expertise as I acquire hands on experience that will be beneficial to my future pursuit as an Archaeologist.
I will be available to resume on the 28th December, 2023. This is because I have to get every necessary thing that will help me be at my best at work. I would appreciate it if you would allow me to work from Monday to Thursday as I would like to enrol for a dance class of which weekends will be for rehearsals.
I look forward to hearing from you soon to submit my resume or for a physical interview.
Kind regards,
Florence

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering as an archaeology student, describe your interest in artefacts, and provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, ensure that the connection between your skills and the museum's needs is more explicit. For example, while you mention 'theoretical knowledge,' elaborating on how this would specifically assist the museum (e.g., cataloguing or assisting with exhibits) would further develop your ideas and demonstrate a more professional approach to the application.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is well-organized with a clear logical progression. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You use appropriate paragraphing and basic cohesive devices such as 'This is because' and 'I would appreciate it if'. To improve, you could use a wider range of linking words to connect your ideas more fluidly. For instance, instead of starting sentences with 'I', try varying your sentence structure to improve the flow between your personal circumstances and your professional aspirations.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary, including subject-specific terms like 'artefacts', 'antiquarian', and 'theoretical knowledge'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'gears' (which is likely not the intended term for museum items) and 'industrial strike action by the Body of Universities' (which sounds slightly unnatural). However, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly. To achieve a higher score, focus on more precise collocations and ensure that your word choices are consistently natural in a formal context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. Most of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound. There are a few minor errors, such as 'part time/ voluntary' (which should be hyphenated as 'part-time/voluntary') and the phrasing 'get every necessary thing' which is slightly informal. Additionally, 'of which weekends will be for rehearsals' is a bit awkward; a better construction would be 'during which weekends will be reserved for rehearsals'. Overall, your control of grammar is good, and these minor slips do not impede communication.
