Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to inquire about any open volunteering opportunities at the museum.
Most importantly, working here can help me strengthen my skills for future employment opportunities. Also, I always wanted to work for the city of Ottawa. This is mainly because I was informed that the museum opens the door of employment opportunities for recent graduates or interns.
Since I am enrolled for Bachelor's in Social Work, my projects have taught me everything that takes someone to be working at the museum. In addition, I recently got 8 bands in IELTS exam, this, in turn, will make me equipped with necessary language skills.
I can start working as soon as starting in September as I have scheduled break for next for months for internship opportunities. I can manage my commute as I drive, and my availability will be open all week for the next quarter.
Kind regards,
Megh Parmar

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as your background in Social Work, and provided specific availability for the upcoming months. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. However, the development of your ideas is somewhat limited; for instance, the connection between your Social Work studies and the specific tasks at a museum could be more explicitly detailed to show how your skills would be directly applicable. Overall, the response is relevant and fulfills the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Most importantly,' 'Also,' and 'In addition' to link your ideas. However, the transition between the second and third paragraphs is slightly abrupt. The use of referencing is generally clear, though some sentences feel a bit disjointed. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different requirements of the task. To improve, ensure that each paragraph flows more naturally into the next by using a wider variety of linking words and phrases.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'inquire,' 'opportunities,' and 'equipped.' There are some minor issues with collocation and word choice, such as 'I recently got 8 bands in IELTS exam' (should be 'I recently achieved an overall band score of 8.0 in the IELTS exam') and 'everything that takes someone to be working' (which is slightly unnatural). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score. Expanding your use of topic-specific vocabulary related to museum work would be beneficial.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I always wanted' (should be 'I have always wanted') and 'scheduled break for next for months' (a typo: 'four'). Additionally, the phrase 'my projects have taught me everything that takes someone to be working' is grammatically awkward. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of verb tenses will help improve your accuracy and overall control of complex structures.
