Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to seek a part-time voluntary role at your museum as I am highly interested in this position.. I am studying Archelogy at the University of Texas and would like to learn more about history, artifacts, and conserved pieces. Hence, volunteering at the museum will provide me an opportunity to learn in depth about the history of United States of America.
In my course, I have learned to research, identify, classify, and analyse the historical data with the facts and archives stored in the digital public library. Additionally, I have organised numerous educational tours to historical places domestically and globally. I have also presented at the state exhibition of monumental history. Therefore, I possess the essential skills to work at a museum such as answer visitor questions, plan tour guides, and document the facts.
If I get hired, I would be able to work three days a week part-time, preferable Monday, Tuesday, and Workday. I can also adjust my schedule if required during the peak visitor season. Thanks.
Yours Sincerely,
James Anderson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, detail your relevant academic background and experience, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. The ideas are well-developed, particularly the connection between your studies in Archaeology and the museum's requirements. To reach a higher band, ensure that all details are accurate; for example, 'Workday' is not a standard day of the week, which slightly impacts the clarity of your availability. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose and relevant supporting information.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which aids readability. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'Hence', 'Additionally', and 'Therefore'. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect sentences more fluidly. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'artifacts', 'conserved', 'archives', and 'monumental history'. There are some minor errors in word choice, such as 'plan tour guides' (which should be 'plan tours' or 'act as a tour guide') and the misuse of 'Workday' instead of 'Wednesday'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise collocation. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly and professionally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I am writing this letter to seek...' and 'If I get hired, I would be able to...'. Most sentences are clear, but there are some grammatical slips. For instance, 'answer visitor questions' should be 'answering visitor questions' to maintain parallel structure after 'such as'. There is also a double period at the end of the first sentence. Despite these minor inaccuracies, your control of grammar is generally good and does not hinder the reader's understanding.
