Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to apply for a voluntary job at the museum. Last week, I came across about an advertisement regarding this job, I am very much interested in this opportunity.

Recently, I completed my master of business administration at University Canada West and now I am free for one month so this unpaid work can increase my hands-on experience.

I can do clear communication with the visitors, also I am good at problem solving. Apart from this, I am highly confident, therefore I believe am a suitable candidate for this work.

I am available from Monday to Saturday, and I prefer to start in the morning at around nine o'clock.

I would appreciate it if you could review my application, and I have attached my resume with the job application. I hope I will get a positive response.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Simran

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, outlined your relevant skills, and provided your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your MBA studies specifically relate to the museum environment, such as mentioning an interest in museum administration or public relations, which would make your application more persuasive and fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph dedicated to a specific requirement of the task. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Apart from this' and 'Therefore' to link your ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally slightly mechanical. To improve, you could use a wider variety of linking words and ensure that the transition between your educational background and your specific skills is smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to convey your message clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'voluntary job', 'hands-on experience', and 'suitable candidate'. However, the range is somewhat limited and relies on fairly common phrasing. For example, 'I came across about an advertisement' is slightly unnatural; 'I saw an advertisement' or 'I read an advertisement' would be better. To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to professional environments or museum operations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies. For instance, 'I came across about an advertisement' contains an unnecessary preposition, and 'I can do clear communication' is better phrased as 'I am an effective communicator'. Additionally, there is a minor punctuation error in the first paragraph where two independent clauses are joined by a comma (a comma splice). Focusing on sentence variety and proofreading for these small errors will help improve your score.
