Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest as a volunteer in a museum on part-time basis.
I have summer breaks form my college and I spend most of my time at home after my art classes. Therefore, I want to utilize my spare time by getting experience as a volunteer. This is the opportunity for me to distribute my time in quality work.
I did many voluntary jobs at school and public places where I used to handle primary school students and visitors. This experience can make interactions more convenient and efficient. Moreover, I have visited the museum several times with my family and friends so I have excessive knowledge about this place which helps me to provide better experience to visitors.
I attend my art classes on weekday evenings, so I can work on weekdays from 9am to 5pm, and anytime on weekends.
Looking forward for your reply.
Yours faithfully,
Jashan

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, described relevant past experience with students and visitors, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are more fully developed. For instance, when mentioning your 'excessive knowledge' of the museum, you could briefly describe a specific exhibition or aspect of the museum that you particularly admire to make your application more persuasive and personal. Overall, the response is clear and meets the requirements of the task effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Therefore', 'Moreover', and 'so', which help to connect your sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to transition between ideas more smoothly. For example, instead of starting sentences with simple conjunctions, you could use more sophisticated transitions to improve the overall cohesion of the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'utilize', 'convenient', and 'efficient'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice. For example, you used 'excessive knowledge', which has a negative connotation; 'extensive' or 'in-depth' would be more appropriate in this context. Additionally, 'distribute my time in quality work' is slightly unnatural phrasing. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise collocations related to professional applications would help elevate your score. Despite these minor issues, your meaning is always clear and the vocabulary is sufficient for the purpose of the letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'I am writing to express my interest as a volunteer in a museum on part-time basis' (missing 'a' before 'part-time') and 'I have summer breaks form my college' (spelling error 'from'). While these errors are present, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on article usage and proofreading for small typos. Your control over basic sentence structures is good, and you successfully convey your message without significant grammatical interference.
