Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope this letter finds you in high spirits! I am writing this letter to express my keen interest in volunteer vacancy for your museum. The pamphlet had been received in yesterday's newspaper which elaborate detailed description of job. I found this opportunity is not only favorable to enhance my customer representative skills, but also pleased my personal satisfaction.

Fortunately, I have previous experience in custor services as I have the related profession. Currently, I am working full-time as a Customer Services Representative and desired to acquire potential knowledge regarding volunteer work. For reference, I have worked part-time in a NGO for approximately six month, in which I gained basic learnings and that can be propitious to fulfill the requirements.

Although, I am committed to my company for weekdays, I am available at weekends for museum. Moreover, I can manage to engage in the evenings of weekdays. Besides this, I am delighted to serve the community for extra-hours as well if required anytime.

I hope you will consider my application and revert back with further information.

Yours Sincerely,

Jack Roberts

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight your relevant customer service experience, and provide specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. However, the development of ideas is slightly limited; for instance, while you mention your experience in an NGO, providing a specific example of a task you performed there would have strengthened the response. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear, and the reader is fully informed of your intentions and qualifications.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter follows a logical structure with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Besides this', and 'Although', which help connect your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or forced. To improve, ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. The use of referencing is generally clear, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout, making it easy to follow your application process.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'propitious', 'keen interest', and 'voluntary'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and minor errors, such as 'pleased my personal satisfaction' (which should be 'provides me with personal satisfaction') and 'custor services' (a spelling error). The phrase 'revert back' is also redundant. While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, the inaccuracies in collocation and word form prevent a higher score. Focusing on more natural collocations will help improve your precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'The pamphlet had been received... which elaborate' (should be 'elaborated' or 'elaborates'), 'desired to acquire' (should be 'I desire'), and 'in a NGO' (should be 'in an NGO'). Additionally, the sentence 'I am available at weekends for museum' is missing an article. While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To reach a higher band, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles.
