Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to request that you consider my application for the recent part-time volunteering opportunity at the museum. I would be glad to contribute to the museum, regardless of whether the position is unpaid.
Firstly, the museum is located directly across from my building, making it very convenient for me to commute. Secondly, I have hands-on experience volunteering at a government office during election-related work.
However, I am genuinely interested in learning more about history and culture. Working at the museum would not only enhance my knowledge but also provide me with valuable experience that would benefit me in my history classes. I have attached my experience letter provided by the government for your reference.
I am available to work morning and afternoon shifts on weekends, as I understand that the museum is particularly busy during this time. I would also be happy to volunteer during my summer break.
Please let me know your valuable intake on this.
Your sincerely,
Neh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, specifically mentioning your interest in history and culture. You also describe your relevant experience with government office work and provide clear details regarding your availability on weekends and during summer breaks. The tone is appropriate for a formal application, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, you could further elaborate on how your specific skills from your previous experience would translate into museum tasks, such as customer service or administrative support, to make your application even more persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a formal closing. The use of cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'However' helps to guide the reader through your arguments effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. The progression of information is smooth, and the referencing is clear throughout the text. The letter maintains a consistent formal tone, which is essential for this type of task. Overall, the structure is well-managed and supports the clarity of your message.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'hands-on experience', 'election-related work', and 'particularly busy' are used accurately. While the vocabulary is functional and appropriate for the task, it remains somewhat standard. To achieve a higher band, you could incorporate more sophisticated or precise collocations related to professional applications, such as 'eager to contribute', 'relevant background', or 'flexible availability'. There are no significant spelling or word-choice errors that impede communication, and the language used is natural for a formal letter.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, the sentence 'Working at the museum would not only enhance my knowledge but also provide me with valuable experience...' shows good control of complex structures. There are very few grammatical errors; however, the phrase 'valuable intake on this' is slightly unnatural in this context—'feedback' or 'consideration' would be more appropriate. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control of grammar is consistent, and your meaning is always clear to the reader.
