Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to apply for a part-time voluntary/unpaid position as published on your website.

I am currently pursuing my education in Hotel Management, and the museum experience could help me in future opportunities. Moreover, I have interest in learning the history of antique things. So, in a way, this job would be beneficial for me in both getting future career's opportunities and continuing my hobbies.

I was born and grown up in this town, which have helped me to learn about the town and its history. Furthermore, as I mentioned that I have a hobby of reading history, I have gained valuable knowledge about the antique items placed in our town museum. In addition, my education in hotel management has developed the skills to welcome and entertain visitors or tourists warmly.

From the next month, I have a summer break in my school, so I am available to work Monday to Friday from opening to closing of the museum. However, I cannot work on the weekends because I have a continue part-job where I have been working every Saturday and Sunday for a while. Please let me know your thoughts. I would appreciate it if you could provide me with the further steps of hiring.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parvinderjeet

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, linking it to your studies in Hotel Management and your personal interest in history. You also describe relevant skills, such as your familiarity with the town's history and your ability to welcome visitors. Finally, your availability is clearly stated, including a logical explanation for your weekend unavailability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more expanded; for example, you could provide a specific example of an antique item you are familiar with to further demonstrate your suitability.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use a range of cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'However' to connect your ideas. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, ensure that the referencing is precise; for instance, in the second paragraph, 'this job' refers back to the voluntary position, which is clear, but ensure that all pronouns consistently point to their antecedents to maintain a high level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'pursuing my education', 'valuable knowledge', and 'prompt response' are used correctly and appropriately for the formal context. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'antique things' (which is quite informal) and 'continue part-job' (which is non-standard). To achieve a higher band, try to incorporate more precise, topic-specific vocabulary related to museum work or professional volunteering. For example, instead of 'antique things', use 'historical artifacts' or 'exhibits'. Your spelling is generally accurate throughout the letter.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a good control of grammar and use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are, however, some recurring errors that prevent a higher score. For example, 'I was born and grown up' should be 'I was born and grew up'. Additionally, 'which have helped me' should be 'which has helped me' (to agree with the singular clause). You also wrote 'I have a continue part-job', which should be 'I have a continuing part-time job'. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the majority of your sentences are grammatically sound. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency will help you improve.
