Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are well. I am writing to you to enrol myself as a volunteer to work in your museum. I recently finished my university and have some free time in which I would like to do something social, which can also benefit me in gaining some experience in my domain of study.
During our university days we were taught skills like communication and advertising. With the help of these skills, I can easily interact with the visitors, guide them and can make them feel welcoming. Moreover, I can also aid in promoting and advertising social media of the museum which can help in generating a digital community for the museum.
I can start my volunteering duties from Monday (August 18th) and can continue until Friday (August 30th), as past that I have my full time job. I would be available to work on Weekdays until 5 pm.
Thank you for considering my application.
Yours faithfully
Sam Jackson

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, specifically mentioning the desire for social engagement and professional experience. You also identify relevant skills, such as communication and advertising, and provide specific dates and times for your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific university background relates to the museum's potential needs, providing more depth to your ideas. Overall, the task is fully addressed with a clear purpose throughout.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs covering the required points, and a professional closing. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate distinct ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'During our university days' to link sentences. However, the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. Some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Overall, the progression of information is clear and easy to follow, meeting the requirements for a solid band 7.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'enrol', 'voluntary duties', and 'generating a digital community'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'make them feel welcoming' (should be 'make them feel welcome') and 'promoting and advertising social media' (which is slightly awkward phrasing). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for higher bands. Incorporating more precise collocations would enhance the quality of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'I recently finished my university' (should be 'finished my university studies') and 'can make them feel welcoming'. Additionally, 'past that I have my full time job' is slightly informal and grammatically weak. However, these errors do not impede communication. To improve, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and refining the use of prepositions. The majority of your sentences are clear, and the punctuation is generally accurate throughout the letter.
