Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this to work voluntary at the museum.
I am on my study break for 4 moths and it is very difficult for me to stay at home. I discussed this with my parents and they told me you need part-time voluntaries. I don't want to skip this valuable chance and want to to unpaid work at your museum.
Hence, I already worked at the art gallery before, I have some knowledge about the maintenance of special places like museum or art gallery. Moreover, I am interested in history, which i guess will be beneficial for this job.
My study break is already begins, therefore I can start work as soon as possible. I can work any time in a day, thus I am living just 1 mile away. For my schedule you can adjust me on any weekdays because weekends I usually spend to go outside with my family or friends.
I would love to hear from you soon.
Kind regards,
Kamaljeet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal application. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your interest in history, you could have elaborated on how this specifically helps the museum. The explanation for your availability is clear, though the phrasing regarding your weekend plans is slightly informal for a formal letter to a director. Overall, the response is relevant and covers all requirements effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the task. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Hence', and 'therefore' to link ideas. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or misused, such as 'Hence' at the start of the second paragraph, which does not logically follow the previous sentence. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'For my schedule you can adjust me on any weekdays', which is slightly awkward. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of the letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'maintenance', 'beneficial', and 'voluntary'. There are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as using 'voluntaries' instead of 'volunteers' and 'work voluntary' instead of 'do voluntary work'. There is also a spelling error ('moths' instead of 'months'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations. To reach a higher band, focus on using more natural phrasing for professional contexts.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'My study break is already begins' (should be 'has already begun') and 'weekends I usually spend to go outside' (should be 'spend going outside'). Punctuation is generally functional, though there are minor issues with sentence construction. While these errors are noticeable, they do not prevent the reader from understanding your message. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences would help improve your score in this criterion.
