Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task 12-1

Dear Sir/Madam

I hope you are doing well. I am student college and living nearby your museum. I am interesting to do voluntary job for you museum.

I see your ads on social media for voluntary job and i am interested to take part in it. I am full time student but now i have off breaks and it is very good way for me to spend my free at your museum. I have lot of interest in this work. Apart from this, i have experience too in this field.

I want to learn communication skills and according to me this is the best way. Because at that job i have to communicate with so many peoples which can help me in future. I am fully available for next 3-4 months with flexible schedule. Your museum is also just 10 minutes walk from my house and this is very good opportunity for me

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The letter covers all three bullet points: the reason for volunteering, relevant skills, and availability. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. While you mention wanting to learn communication skills, the explanation of your 'experience' is vague and lacks specific detail. To reach a higher band, you should elaborate on what kind of experience you have and how exactly it would benefit the museum. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it lacks some of the professional polish expected in a job application.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. There is a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the conclusion. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and limited. Phrases like 'Apart from this' and 'Because at that job' are used, but the transitions between sentences could be smoother. The referencing is generally clear, but the overall flow is occasionally interrupted by simple sentence structures and repetitive phrasing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks variety and precision. You rely on basic terms such as 'good way', 'lot of interest', and 'very good opportunity'. There are also some minor errors in word choice, such as 'I am student college' (should be 'I am a college student') and 'I am interesting to do' (should be 'I am interested in doing'). To improve, try to incorporate more specific vocabulary related to volunteering and professional environments to demonstrate a wider range.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('I am student'), incorrect verb forms ('I am interesting'), and punctuation issues (e.g., 'i' is not capitalized). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, they are frequent enough to impact the overall accuracy of the writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and proper article usage would significantly improve your score.
