Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to apply for the part-time job as a volunteer in your renowned museum. I have recently completed my Master's in social work and keen on working in a firm which will boost my knowledge and will help me gain experience. Typically, I have worked in a childcare centre for almost two years before completing my degree. Since childhood, my nature was to help as many people I can and show kindness towards people.
Firstly, I have experience in juggling between different tasks at the same time. Moreover, I have completed my bachelor's in Arts and I have a complete knowledge of the ancient history. However, I can be a great help to the visitors coming at the museum.
Lastly, I am available to work on weekends and even on weekday such as Thursday and Friday from 9 am to 5 pm.
Looking forward to a response.
Yours faithfully,
Harman

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have addressed all three bullet points of the prompt: explaining your motivation, describing your skills, and providing your availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For example, while you mention your Master's degree and interest in history, you could have provided more specific examples of how these would benefit the museum, such as assisting with guided tours or cataloging artifacts. The response covers the requirements, but the depth of information is basic, which prevents it from reaching the higher bands.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a closing. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to transition between ideas. While the structure is clear, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition in the second paragraph ('However, I can be a great help...') is slightly awkward, as 'however' is used to contrast, but the sentence actually follows logically from the previous point. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renowned', 'voluntary', and 'childcare centre'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'keen on working in a firm' (a museum is usually referred to as an 'institution' or 'organization') and 'my nature was to help' (a more natural phrasing would be 'it has always been my nature to help'). The vocabulary is functional and allows you to convey your message clearly, but it lacks the precision and sophistication required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'keen on working' (missing the subject 'I am'), 'help as many people I can' (missing 'as'), and 'weekday such as Thursday' (should be plural 'weekdays'). Additionally, 'I have a complete knowledge of the ancient history' contains an unnecessary article. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to suggest a lack of full control over complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
