Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to you to express my interest to be a volunteer for your museum.
Actually I am very keen to participate in volunteering because I want to utilize my extra time to do something productive. It not only provides inner satisfaction but also gives a chance to serve and contribute to the betterment of our community. Moreover, serving at a museum will be very educational as I can come know about the museum's history and all the pieces displayed there along with the stories and significance behind them.
So, I would like to highlight my experience here. During my college studies, I worked as a member of college's volunteers committee for three year. I used to participate in organizing different kinds of functions and was responsible for the smooth running of them. Thus, I am highly organized, well-maintained, has attention-to-detail and have strong communication skills, which will be a strong point to be part of your team.
I am available to serve you on the weekends, holidays and evenings. If anything unexpected arises, I can happily arrange to be part of that.
I look forward to hearing from you and thank you for your consideration for this matter.
Yours Faithfully,
HK.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points of the task. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, describe relevant past experience in a college committee, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, providing enough detail to satisfy the requirements of the prompt. The letter follows the requested opening and closing conventions, demonstrating a good understanding of the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your ideas easily. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Thus', and 'In addition' to link your thoughts. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be slightly smoother. The overall progression of ideas is logical, and the use of referencing is generally clear, contributing to a coherent and easy-to-read piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'utilize my extra time', 'betterment of our community', and 'attention-to-detail' are used effectively. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'well-maintained' to describe a person, which is typically used for objects or buildings. Additionally, 'come know about' should be 'come to know about'. Despite these minor inaccuracies, the vocabulary is adequate for the task and allows for precise communication of your intentions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The letter contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you show good control over most of your writing, there are some grammatical slips. For example, 'I am highly organized, well-maintained, has attention-to-detail' contains a subject-verb agreement error ('has' should be 'have' to match the subject 'I'). Also, 'interest to be' is better phrased as 'interest in being'. Despite these occasional errors, the meaning is never obscured, and the majority of your sentences are clear and grammatically sound.
