Student answer (Band 8.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the voluntary position at your museum. I am very interested in history, culture, and learning about different communities, so I believe working at the museum would be a valuable and enjoyable experience for me.
I would like to do voluntary work because I want to gain practical experience and improve my communication skills. I also think it would be a good opportunity to meet new people and learn more about the history and culture of my local area. As I am a student, I believe this experience would also be useful for my future career.
I am a friendly, responsible, and hardworking person. I can communicate well with people and I am comfortable working as part of a team. I am also patient and willing to learn new things. In addition, I have good organizational skills and basic computer skills, which could be useful for helping visitors, organizing information, or carrying out simple office tasks.
Regarding my availability, I am available on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. I can also work on Saturday afternoons if necessary. I would be happy to discuss the working hours with you and adjust my schedule if required.
Thank you for considering my application. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours faithfully,

You have fully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, provided a relevant list of skills and qualities, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application, and the ideas are well-developed and relevant to the context of a museum. The response is well-structured and follows the conventions of a formal letter, including the required opening and closing. You have successfully met all the requirements of the task.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which makes the letter easy to follow. You have used appropriate cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Regarding my availability', and 'also' to link your sentences and paragraphs effectively. The paragraphing is logical and contributes to the overall clarity of the message. The flow of information is smooth, and the transition between your skills and your availability is handled well.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly and appropriately. The language is natural and fits the context of a formal application. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it is somewhat standard. To reach a higher band, you could incorporate more precise or sophisticated collocations related to museum work or professional volunteering. For example, instead of 'good organizational skills', you could use 'meticulous organizational abilities'. Overall, the lexical range is adequate and there are no errors that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0
Your grammar is accurate and you demonstrate a good control of sentence structures. You have used a mix of simple and complex sentences effectively, such as 'I am writing to apply for the voluntary position at your museum' and 'I am also patient and willing to learn new things.' The punctuation is correct throughout the letter. There are no significant grammatical errors, and the majority of your sentences are error-free. The control of verb tenses and word order is consistent, which ensures that your message is communicated clearly and professionally.
