Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir,
I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter regarding to do volunteer work at the museum. I recently got to know that you are looking for passionate people in museum for part-time positions.
I am a college student looking for an experience in customer-service and I believe that working in museum will develop my skills and I can make a better career as well. I have some experience in customer service and communication which could be helpful in this role. As I live near this museum, so I know the stuff that is for display and routes as well. So it would be easier for me to do this task. I am happy to do a volunteer job because developed skills are an asset for a person. As I told you I am a college student so I am available on weekends.
I hope you will give me this opportunity and I am looking further to work for the community.
Thank you
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points required by the prompt. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, describe your customer service skills, and specify your weekend availability. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter. However, some ideas are slightly underdeveloped; for instance, the explanation of why you know the museum's layout could be more professional. To reach a higher band, ensure that your reasons for wanting to volunteer are more specific to the museum's mission or your personal interest in history or culture, rather than just focusing on personal career development. Overall, the task requirements are met effectively.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the purpose of the letter to your skills and finally your availability. Paragraphing is used, though the structure is quite simple. You use some cohesive devices like 'As I live near' and 'So it would be easier', but the flow is occasionally repetitive. The use of 'So' at the start of sentences is a bit informal for a formal application. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words such as 'furthermore', 'consequently', or 'in addition' to connect your ideas more fluidly and professionally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'passionate', 'customer-service', and 'asset'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'regarding to do' (should be 'regarding doing') and 'make a better career' (should be 'advance my career'). The vocabulary is functional but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. Focusing on learning more formal collocations related to job applications would help elevate your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'working in museum' (missing an article: 'the museum'), 'I recently got to know that you are looking' (slightly informal), and 'looking further to work' (should be 'looking forward to working'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but ensure you use 'Yours faithfully' correctly when you start with 'Dear Sir or Madam'. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score.
