Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir/Madam,
My name is Carol George. I am doing my Master's in Cardiff University. I came to hear about a part-time voluntary role in the City museum. I am writing this letter to inform you about my interest in joining in the voluntary team. As I am doing my Master's I am getting lot of free times to engage in such voluntary as well as charitable services in local communities. Meanwhile, I am currently working as a community volunteer in RNID - a voluntary foundation for people with hearing disabilities. Thus I strongly believe that I can fit in this role and contribute some time for those who are in need.
My strong communication skills and team work skills could definitely useful for this post. Whatever the role is I believe that I could make some difference as best as I can.
I am hereby attaching my contact details;
Carol George
72 Salisbury Road,
Cathays,
CF24 4AD
Looking forward to hearing from you,
Kind Regards,
Carol George

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You explain your motivation, mention your background in volunteering, and state your skills. However, the third bullet point regarding your availability is entirely missing from the content. You provided your address instead of your availability, which is a significant omission. To improve, ensure you explicitly state when you are free to work (e.g., weekends, weekday evenings). The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, but the failure to address a key requirement of the task prevents a higher score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The letter is organised into clear paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'Meanwhile' and 'Thus', though these are sometimes used slightly awkwardly. The progression of ideas is logical, moving from the introduction to your skills and then to the closing. However, the transition between the second paragraph and the contact details is abrupt. To improve, use more varied linking words and ensure that each paragraph flows naturally into the next, rather than relying on simple sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'voluntary role', 'charitable services', and 'community volunteer'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'joining in the voluntary team' (should be 'joining the volunteer team') and 'contribute some time for those who are in need' (which is slightly off-topic as you are applying to a museum, not a charity). While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning, it lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors. For example, 'I am doing my Master's in Cardiff University' should be 'at Cardiff University'. You also wrote 'I came to hear about', which is unnatural; 'I recently heard about' would be better. Phrases like 'getting lot of free times' contain errors in article usage and pluralisation. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to limit your score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and correct preposition usage.
