Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this to respond to voluntary work in a museum. I saw the advertisement on social media that you are looking for part-time workers. I am very passionate to applying for this position.

I have several reasons to do this job. Firstly, this unpaid work will help me to gain more valuable experience and sufficient knowledge about our roots. Secondly, the working atmosphere would support me to be comfortable with people while communicating on various instruments.

Coming to the skills and qualities, I am from an Army background and I have some qualities in my genes including, time management, excellent communication, and strong team management. I believe these skills would be useful in performing any challenging task.

I would prefer to do this job only on weekends from morning to evening at any time depending on your schedule. In addition, I am not available on 13th October because I have to attend my sister's engagement. After this I am fully available to work on weekends.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter covers all three bullet points effectively. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, highlight relevant skills from your background, and provide specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific skills (e.g., 'time management') would be applied to museum tasks, such as guiding tours or assisting with exhibits. The purpose of the letter is clear from the outset, and the response is well-structured to address the prompt requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'In addition' to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical. To improve, try to vary your linking phrases and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural. For instance, the transition between your background and your availability could be smoother. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, and the letter maintains a consistent focus throughout.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'working atmosphere' and 'challenging task' are used correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in collocation and word choice, such as 'respond to voluntary work' (should be 'apply for') and 'communicating on various instruments' (which is unclear in this context). To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions suitable for a formal letter. While your vocabulary is adequate for the task, incorporating more sophisticated, context-specific terminology would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While most of your sentences are clear, there are some grammatical slips, such as 'I am very passionate to applying' (should be 'passionate about applying') and 'Coming to the skills' (a slightly informal opening for a formal letter). Punctuation is generally accurate, though there is an unnecessary comma after 'including'. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your meaning is never obscured. To achieve a higher band, aim for greater variety in complex sentence structures and ensure consistent control over verb patterns.
