Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing great. I am writing this to respond to an advertisement for the voluntary work in your museum. I saw this advertisement on social media that you are looking for part-time workers. I am very passionate to applying for this position.

I have several reasons to do this job. Firstly, this unpaid work will help me to gain more valuable experience and sufficient knowledge about our roots. Secondly, the working atmosphere would support me to be comfortable with people while communicating on various topics.

Coming to the skills and qualities, I am from an Army background and I have some qualities in my genes including, time management, excellent communication, and strong team management. I believe these skills would be useful in performing any challenging task.

I would prefer to do this job only on weekends from morning to evening at any time depending on your schedule. In addition, I am not available on the13th of October because I have to attend my sister's engagement. After this I am fully available to work on weekends.

I would appreciate it if you can provide me this opportunity to contribute my time and skills towards your organization.

I look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Parminder Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points of the prompt. You clearly explain your motivation for volunteering, provide relevant skills such as time management and communication, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. The ideas are well-developed and relevant, and the purpose of the letter is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening salutation matches the prompt's instruction; you used 'Dear Sir,' but the prompt specifically requested 'Dear Sir or Madam,' which is a minor oversight in following instructions.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the letter easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'Firstly,' 'Secondly,' and 'In addition' to link your points effectively. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter. To improve, ensure that transitions between sentences are slightly more varied to avoid a mechanical feel, and check for minor referencing errors, such as the spacing issue in 'the13th'.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'passionate,' 'valuable experience,' and 'contribute.' However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'I have some qualities in my genes' is an unnatural expression; 'innate qualities' or 'personal attributes' would be more appropriate. Additionally, 'I am very passionate to applying' should be 'passionate about applying.' While these errors do not impede communication, they limit the score to a 6.0 as they reflect a lack of precision in more complex phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'I am writing this to respond to an advertisement for the voluntary work' (should be 'for voluntary work') and 'I have some qualities in my genes including, time management' (the comma after 'including' is unnecessary). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede the reader's understanding. To improve, focus on article usage and prepositional phrases to increase the accuracy of your complex sentences.
