Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this letter to inform you that I want to work as a volunteer at the museum.

I saw your advertisement on the radio last light about part-time voluntary work at the museum. As I finished with my exams last week now I am free for two months so I want to join your team. I am living in the next street. I have an interest in history so this is very good opportunity for me to enhance my knowledge.

I have six months experience in customer service. So it will be easy for me to deal with the visitors. I have good communication skills as well as I know three different languages which help me a lot to do a good job.

I am available for morning and evening shifts. You can give me any of them.

I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours faithfully

Jashanpreet Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: explaining your motivation, describing your skills, and stating your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the start. To reach a higher band, you could expand on your ideas. For example, when mentioning your interest in history, you could specify what kind of history or what aspect of the museum's collection interests you most. Similarly, providing a brief example of your customer service experience would make your application more persuasive and better developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The letter follows a logical progression, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. You use basic cohesive devices like 'so' and 'as well as' to link ideas. However, the transitions between sentences are sometimes a bit mechanical. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to this'. Additionally, ensure that your paragraphing is distinct; currently, the letter is quite short, and clearer separation between the introduction, body, and conclusion would enhance the overall structure.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is sufficient to convey your message clearly, but it remains quite basic. Phrases like 'very good opportunity' and 'do a good job' are functional but lack sophistication. You have attempted some relevant vocabulary related to the task, such as 'advertisement', 'customer service', and 'communication skills'. To achieve a higher score, aim to incorporate more precise, topic-specific collocations. For instance, instead of saying you want to 'do' voluntary work, you could 'contribute to' or 'assist with' the museum's operations. Avoid minor errors like 'last light' (likely meant 'last night').

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. While your meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips. For example, 'As I finished with my exams last week now I am free' is a run-on sentence that requires better punctuation or a conjunction. You also have minor errors with articles and prepositions, such as 'on the radio' (which is fine, but contextually odd for a museum advertisement) and 'in the next street'. To improve, focus on sentence variety and ensuring that your subject-verb agreement and tense usage are consistent throughout the letter.
