Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter to inform you about my keen interest in doing a part-time voluntary job at your museum. I really want to do this job because I learn new skills as well as believe in getting some knowledge from old stuff.
As I describe my hobbies, I have enough knowledge about histories, and in college my main subject was literature, so I know the different languages. It is very easy for me to understand the topics to explain to others in a polite way. It should be a benefit for your museum.
Currently, I am a student at a university, so I am available as a part-time worker. In summertime I am also available for weekends. If I get this job, I definitely will not let you down. Monday to Friday I am available in the mornings, and for the weekends I am available at night.
I would really appreciate it if I got this job. Thank you so much for your time and consideration. I am waiting for your response.
Your Sincerly,
Sweta Maisuriya.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, outlined your relevant background in literature and history, and provided specific availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter of application. To improve, ensure that your reasons for wanting to volunteer are more specific; for example, instead of 'getting some knowledge from old stuff', you could mention a passion for preserving cultural heritage or local history. This would demonstrate a more professional and thoughtful approach to the role.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is logically organised with clear paragraphing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific requirement of the task, which makes the information easy to follow. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Currently' and 'If I get this job' to link your ideas. To reach a higher band, try to use a wider variety of linking words and phrases to improve the flow between sentences, such as 'Furthermore', 'Consequently', or 'In addition to my academic background'. This would make the transition between your skills and your availability feel more natural and sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. However, some word choices are quite informal or imprecise, such as 'old stuff' and 'histories'. Using more precise terminology would enhance the professional tone of your application. You have a sufficient range to convey your meaning, but you should aim to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to museum work or volunteering to demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While your meaning is always clear, there are some grammatical inaccuracies, such as 'As I describe my hobbies' (which should be 'To describe my background') and 'Your Sincerly' (a spelling error). Additionally, some phrasing is slightly awkward, such as 'It should be a benefit for your museum'. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and refining your use of articles and prepositions. Increasing your use of error-free complex sentences will help you achieve a higher band score.
