Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Director,
My Name is Veena. I am writing this letter to request for a part-time voluntary work at the museum.
I am a teacher by profession and very much interested in arts. I want to use my vacation to gain some knowledge in arts. As the museum is of arts I would like to get familiar with different kinds of artwork, tools used to make and its history.
In our school we do a lot of voluntary works in the rural areas to educate people on hygiene. I have organisation skills which helps to allocate work to people for smooth flow of work. I am very friendly and can work efficiently with the team.
I can start work immediately and can work through out the summer, five days per week that is Monday to Friday from 9:00 am to 6:00pm. I have attached a copy of my resume and contact information. I would like to know more about the roles and responsibilities of work.
Looking forward to hear from you.
Yours sincerely,
Y.Veena.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted relevant skills such as organizational abilities and teamwork, and provided specific availability details. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter, and the purpose is clear from the outset. To reach a higher band, ensure that your opening and closing salutations are consistent; you began with 'Dear Sir or Madam' as instructed, but addressed the letter to 'Dear Director' in the body. Additionally, expanding slightly on how your teaching background specifically benefits the museum would further develop your ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized, with each paragraph focusing on a specific requirement of the task. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from your motivation to your skills and finally to your availability. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'In our school' and 'In addition' (implied), though the flow could be improved with more varied linking words. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different sections of your letter. To improve, try to use a wider range of cohesive devices to connect sentences more fluidly, rather than relying on simple sentence structures.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for this task. You use relevant terms such as 'voluntary work', 'profession', 'roles and responsibilities', and 'resume'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'request for a part-time voluntary work' (should be 'apply for' or 'request part-time voluntary work') and 'museum is of arts' (should be 'museum of art'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of more sophisticated or precise language. Expanding your vocabulary to include more idiomatic or precise professional collocations would enhance your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is always clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'My Name is Veena' (capitalization error), 'voluntary works' (uncountable noun), and 'Looking forward to hear from you' (should be 'hearing'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor issues with spacing and capitalization. To achieve a higher band, focus on ensuring subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms after phrases like 'look forward to'. The majority of your sentences are clear, but more variety in complex sentence structures would demonstrate greater control.
