Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest to do part-time voluntary work at the museum. I have done my bachelors in history and wanted to share the knowledge to the community. I would also like to physically see things which were mentioned in the books.
Currently, I am working as a History Professor at the University of America. Hence talking to a group of people or participating into any activity of the museum will not be challenging for me. Also, being a teacher naturally brings patience to me which will help the visitors who don't understand things at a time.
As a full-time employee at the university, I am available during the weekends from 9 Am until the closing time of the museum. Also, if required as an exception, I can also take extra time off to cover some last moment sick calls by an employee.
I am looking forward to hearing positive response from your end.
Regards,
XYZ

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly explained your motivation for volunteering, highlighted your professional background as a History Professor as a relevant skill, and specified your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. To reach a higher band, you could expand slightly on how your specific academic background would benefit the museum's visitors, perhaps by mentioning a particular area of historical interest or a specific type of museum activity you would like to assist with, rather than keeping the description of your contributions somewhat general.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs addressing each requirement, and a formal closing. Each paragraph has a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'Also', and 'As a full-time employee', which help the flow of ideas. However, the transition between the first and second paragraph is slightly abrupt. Using more varied linking phrases or ensuring smoother logical progression between sentences would improve the cohesion. Overall, the structure is easy to follow and serves the purpose of the letter well.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. Phrases like 'express my interest', 'participating into any activity', and 'last moment sick calls' are functional. However, there are some minor collocation issues, such as 'done my bachelors' (should be 'completed my bachelor's degree') and 'share the knowledge to the community' (should be 'share my knowledge with the community'). While these do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise word choice and better awareness of natural English collocations to reach a higher band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional 'if required as an exception, I can also take extra time off'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'interest to do' (should be 'interest in doing') and 'don't understand things at a time' (should be 'do not understand things immediately'). Additionally, 'participating into' is incorrect; the correct preposition is 'participating in'. Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not interfere with the reader's understanding of your application.
