Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

I am writing this letter with regard to express my interset in doing part-time voluntary work to your museum. I have completed my Undergraduate in Humanities and currently I am pursuing my "Masters in Archaeology". So, I think this position is suitable for me because I can learn about numerous sculptures and idols that has been found by you.

Also, while working I will come across ample individuals which not only fosters my cou communicating skills but also I can learn about various cultures across the globe. Additionally, I had finished my intern ship in Royal Museum which is located in the United kingdom. I learned about carbon dating which is vital to know the age of the artifacts. I am a polite, hardworking person with hands on experience of working in museums.

I have classes on weekdays and I have holiday on weekends so, I can work weekends and as far as I know, you're looking for someone who can work on Saturdays and Sundays.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. I am looking forward to hear from you.

Yours, faithfully,

Rahul.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three bullet points of the prompt effectively. You clearly state your motivation for volunteering, highlight relevant academic and practical experience, and specify your availability. The tone is appropriate for a formal application. To reach a higher band, ensure that your ideas are slightly more developed; for instance, when mentioning your interest in the museum's sculptures, you could briefly explain how this aligns with your specific research interests in archaeology. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the requirements of the task are fully met.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. You use cohesive devices such as 'Also,' 'Additionally,' and 'So' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive. The paragraphing is appropriate, though the second paragraph is quite dense and could be split to improve readability. The progression of ideas is generally smooth, and the reader can easily follow your argument for why you are a suitable candidate for the voluntary position.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'Undergraduate,' 'Humanities,' 'Archaeology,' and 'artifacts.' There are some minor errors in word choice and spelling, such as 'interset' (interest), 'intern ship' (internship), and 'ample individuals' (which is slightly unnatural in this context; 'a wide range of people' would be better). While you attempt to use more sophisticated vocabulary, some collocations are slightly off. Expanding your range of topic-specific vocabulary and focusing on precise word choice will help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical slips, such as 'with regard to express' (should be 'with regard to expressing'), 'idols that has been found' (subject-verb agreement: 'have been'), and 'looking forward to hear' (should be 'looking forward to hearing'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the letter. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of gerunds after specific phrases. The majority of your sentences are understandable, but more consistent control over complex structures is needed for a higher band.
