Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir,
I am writing this letter to apply for a part-time job at your museum located at 52, Lawson Street, Onikpan Road, Lagos State.
I am currently writing my third year semester examination; I would be done on the 15th of April, 2026. After my exams, I will be on a 3-month holiday, so I would like to work at the museum for this short time before returning back to school. If I am given the opportunity to work, this would significantly increase my knowledge of notable historians who have made great impact by ending slavery in our society today. As a result of this, I can use my experience working there as a project discussion in my university.
I possess communication and problem-solving skills, which will be very valuable to your customers. This is because I believe rendering good customer's service through good interaction and helping with customer's complaints is paramount for a great service.
I will be available to work from the 17th of May, 2026, I look forward to your positive response.
Yours faithfully,
Aisosa

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The candidate has successfully addressed all bullet points outlined in the prompt. First, the purpose of writing is clearly stated, though slightly confused by applying for a 'job' rather than 'voluntary/unpaid work' in the opening sentence, yet the context of volunteering is maintained throughout. Second, the student explains why they want to do the work, linking it to learning about notable historians and university project discussions. Third, relevant skills and qualities such as communication and problem-solving are mentioned, along with justifications related to customer service. Finally, clear dates regarding availability are provided. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, fully satisfying the task requirements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear, logical structure with appropriate opening and closing salutations. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate different ideas, such as availability and personal motivation in the second paragraph, and skills in the third. Cohesive devices are generally well managed, using transitional phrases such as 'As a result of this' and 'This is because'. However, there is a minor punctuation splice in the final paragraph ('from the 17th of May, 2026, I look forward'), which slightly disrupts the flow. Overall, the organization is coherent and progression is clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating lexical items such as 'possess', 'paramount', and 'significantly increase'. There are a few unnatural collocations or word choices, such as 'writing my third year semester examination' instead of 'taking my third-year semester exams', and 'customer's service' instead of 'customer service'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended meaning without impeding communication, and there are appropriate attempts to use less common phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional structures ('If I am given the opportunity...') and subordinate clauses. There are a few grammatical inaccuracies and punctuation slips, such as the comma splice in the final paragraph and minor prepositional misuse ('returning back to school', where 'back' is redundant). However, the majority of sentences are clear and error-free, and these minor issues do not impede understanding. The control over grammar is solid for an intermediate level.
