Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest to do volunterring at the museum. I recently came to know that you are hiring some people to get some help to remove some old paintings and add few novel paintings and drawings on the display.
I would like to be a part of the team because I wanted to get some experience working unpaid as requested from my school. Additionally, I am personally intrested to get to know about the paintings, sculptures and their background.
I am currently enrolled in a course related to the ancient studies and having some experience working with the same. The placement opportunity will allow me to reflect some skills which I have learned through my studies.
I will be available to work from the next week upto this month. I would be delighted to join the placement as per your schedule without any hesitation.
I hope you consider my application for this opportunity and grant me a volunteer position at your museum.
Yours faithfully,
Anjali

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate addresses all parts of the prompt effectively. The purpose of the letter is clearly established in the opening, explaining the desire to do voluntary work because of school requirements and personal interest in paintings and sculptures. The student also describes relevant skills and qualities, mentioning enrolment in an ancient studies course and prior experience in the field. Additionally, details regarding availability are provided, stating availability from next week until the end of the month. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director, and ideas are sufficiently developed to meet the requirements of General Training Task 1.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter is organised into logical paragraphs, beginning with an appropriate formal salutation and closing. Progression is generally clear from the statement of purpose to reasons, qualifications, availability, and a closing request. Cohesive devices such as 'Additionally' and 'Therefore' (or similar transitions) are used to connect ideas, though some referencing and transitions feel slightly formulaic or mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate each main point requested in the prompt, supporting an easy and coherent read throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'enrolled', 'placement opportunity', and 'reflection'. However, there are notable spelling errors, such as 'volunterring' instead of 'volunteering' and 'intrested' instead of 'interested'. Word choice is occasionally imprecise, such as 'interest to do' instead of 'interest in doing' and 'novel paintings' instead of 'new' or 'recent' paintings. These lexical slips do not impede overall communication, but they prevent the score from reaching higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I am currently enrolled in a course related to the ancient studies and having some experience working with the same.' There are several grammatical inaccuracies, including preposition errors ('interest to do' instead of 'interest in') and tense inconsistencies ('I wanted to get' when present or future intent is meant). Punctuation and sentence structures are generally controlled well enough to ensure meaning is clear, but the frequency of minor structural and grammatical errors places this text firmly in the band 6 category.
