Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to enquire in about a voluntary position at the local Art and Music museum.
Firstly, I really need this part-time position because I am planning to apply for the civil services. Having voluntary experience will not only improve my chances of being shortlisted but also strengthen the CV. Additionally, I would like to do this voluntary work to contribute in my community just like my father as he is also doing unpaid work at your museum.
I have great communication, problem-solving, leadership, and teamwork skills that are essential at every workplace. Moreover, since I have 6 months of work experience from previous employer at the historical museum, I believe it will elevate my application of voluntary work at the museum.
I am available every Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday since I am getting trailer from a former civil officer from Thursday to Sunday. In terms of timings, I am flexible to do any of the mornings or evenings shifts.
I hope you would consider my application and I am looking forward to your revert.
Yours faithfully,
Navjot Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0
The response fully addresses all bullet points outlined in the task prompt. You successfully explain why you want to do voluntary work, mentioning both your career aspirations regarding the civil services and a personal connection through your father. Furthermore, you effectively describe your skills and qualities, such as communication and leadership, and include relevant prior experience at a historical museum. Finally, you clearly give details of when you are available for work, specifying both days and shift preferences. Your ideas are well-developed and the tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a museum director. Therefore, this meets the criteria for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
Your letter demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organisation. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of the letter in the introduction to your motivations, skills, availability, and finally a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'In terms of' are used appropriately to link ideas together. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. While referencing and cohesive management are generally well handled, there is occasional slight awkwardness in phrasing that prevents it from reaching the highest band, but cohesion never attracts negative attention.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate to good range of vocabulary suitable for a formal letter. You successfully use less common phrases like 'shortlisted', 'civil services', and 'problem-solving'. However, there are a few minor lexical and collocation inaccuracies, such as writing 'enquire in about' instead of 'enquire about', 'contribute in my community' instead of 'contribute to my community', and 'getting trailer' which appears to be a vocabulary misuse for receiving training. Despite these occasional slips, your vocabulary is precise enough to convey your message clearly and meets the requirements for a solid band 6.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You make use of a mix of simple and complex sentence structures throughout the letter, such as conditional or relative clauses ('Having voluntary experience will not only improve... but also strengthen...'). There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably 'enquire in about', 'contribute in my community', and 'elevate my application of voluntary work' where 'for' would be more natural than 'of'. Additionally, the sentence 'I hope you would consider' could be improved. However, these errors do not impede communication, and the majority of your sentences remain clear and structurally sound, supporting a competent band score.
