Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I hope this letter finds you well.

Recently, one of my friends advised me that City Side museum is looking for a few individuals to do part-time voluntary work. I have a few months off from my college and I am getting bored at home. Therefore, I would like to work part-time as a voluntary at City Side museum location.

I have multiple years of experience in the customer care field, which reflects good skills to interact with visitors and assist them accordingly. Moreover, I worked for a few months as a parking attendant, which would help me to carry out my duty in parking area to guide people to park their vehicles at designated spots.

As I am aware that you are looking someone to work on weekends. I would be happy to assist you based on your required hours(evenings or mornings). Even, I can work on weekdays as well. Please feel free to reach me, if you have any questions.

I will look forward to your prompt response.

Yours faithfully,

Micheal.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all the required bullet points of the prompt. The writer explains why they want to do voluntary work at the museum, stating they have free time and want to avoid getting bored while also mentioning a friend's recommendation. They describe relevant skills and qualities, such as customer care experience and previous work as a parking attendant. Finally, they give clear details of when they would be available, noting availability on weekends, evenings, mornings, and weekdays. The purpose of the letter is clear, and the tone is appropriate for a formal application. All parts of the task are adequately addressed, earning a solid Band 7.0 for Task Achievement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, middle, and end, following standard formal letter conventions. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different points, such as the reason for applying, skills, and availability. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, with transition words like 'Moreover' and 'Therefore' helping to connect ideas, though paragraph transitions could be smoother. Referencing is mostly clear, and the overall progression of information makes it easy for the reader to follow the applicant's message from start to finish. This aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a formal job or volunteer application, including terms like 'voluntary work', 'customer care field', and 'designated spots'. However, there are some lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as using 'voluntary' as a noun instead of 'volunteer', and writing 'City Side museum location' instead of simply 'the City Side Museum'. While less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, these occasional errors in word choice and collocation place the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional clause in 'Please feel free to reach me, if you have any questions' and the relative clause in 'skills and qualities you have that would be useful'. There are some grammatical errors, notably preposition misuse in phrases like 'advised me that' (instead of 'told me that') and a minor punctuation issue with the comma before 'if'. Additionally, there is a fragment sentence ('Even, I can work on weekdays as well.'). Despite these errors, meaning is never impeded, reflecting the characteristics of Band 6.0.
