Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the voluntary position at your museum, which I recently learned is available for local residents. I would be very pleased to have the opportunity to contribute my time and skills to your organization.

I have always been interested in history, culture, and art, and I believe that working at the museum would be an excellent way to learn more about these subjects. I am a responsible, friendly, and hardworking person who enjoys communicating with people. I would be happy to assist visitors, provide information about exhibitions, help organize events, or perform other tasks required by the museum.

I am available to work during evenings and weekends, and I can volunteer for approximately eight to ten hours per week. Although I am not looking for payment, I would appreciate the opportunity to gain practical experience and develop my communication and teamwork skills.

I would be grateful if you could consider my application. I am available for an interview at your convenience and would be happy to provide any additional information you may require.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

krupa.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully and effectively addresses all parts of the task prompt. The writer clearly explains the motivation for wanting to do voluntary work at the museum, noting an interest in history, culture, and art. Furthermore, relevant skills and personal qualities are outlined, such as being responsible, friendly, and hardworking, along with practical ways the writer can assist, like welcoming visitors and helping with events. Finally, clear details of availability are provided, stating availability during evenings and weekends for approximately eight to ten hours per week. The tone is appropriately formal and polite for a letter to a museum director, and all bullet points are thoroughly developed.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The letter exhibits clear logical organisation and natural progression throughout. Ideas are logically sequenced, moving smoothly from the statement of purpose in the opening paragraph to motivations, skills, availability, and concluding remarks in subsequent paragraphs. Paragraphing is used very effectively, with each paragraph serving a distinct and clear function. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'Although', and appropriate referencing pronouns are managed well and contribute to the overall readability of the text. There is no evidence of mechanical or faulty cohesion, and the letter reads as a cohesive, unified piece of professional correspondence.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

The writer demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for a general correspondence task. Phrases such as 'express my interest', 'contribute my time and skills', and 'practical experience' are used accurately and appropriately. While the vocabulary is generally standard rather than highly sophisticated or uncommon, it is precise enough to convey all intended meanings clearly. There are no notable spelling errors or inappropriate collocations in the response. The lexical control is solid throughout, easily meeting the requirements for a high band by maintaining natural word choice and good stylistic awareness.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response displays a good variety of sentence structures, successfully combining simple sentences with complex clauses (e.g., 'Although I am not looking for payment, I would appreciate the opportunity to gain practical experience...'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammar and punctuation are handled with strong control. There are only very occasional minor slips, but these never impede communication or cause strain for the reader. Verb tenses are used consistently and accurately across the entire letter, demonstrating a reliable command of English grammar suitable for professional communication.
