Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I hope this message finds you well. The purpose of my writing today is to express my interest in applying for the volunteer part-time position as mentioned in the advertisement posted on your website.
I am quite keen to participate in this role to gain more experience that would help me to improve my employability and polish my resume. Apart from that, because of my college break, I am mostly free that I really want to utilize it efficiently.
I have great communication and leadership skills, which I believe would be useful for this role. Additionally, I can perform very well as a team member because of my reliability and cooperation with my other co-workers.
I would be completely available to work during the evening from Saturday to Thursday. However, on Monday, I could do mornings. I hope this availability would work for you.
Thank you so much for your time and consideration.
Yours sincerely,
Gurkirat Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the purpose of writing is clearly stated, explaining a desire to gain experience, improve employability, and make good use of college break time. Second, relevant skills and qualities such as communication, leadership, reliability, and cooperation are described. Third, specific details regarding work availability are clearly provided, outlining evenings from Saturday to Thursday and Monday mornings. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director, and the requirements of the task are well met throughout the response.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter demonstrates a clear and logical overall organisation. The response begins with an appropriate formal salutation, followed by a logical progression of paragraphs moving from the purpose of the letter to personal qualities, availability, and a polite sign-off. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Additionally' and 'However', to link ideas and guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with distinct paragraphs handling separate aspects of the prompt. Referencing throughout the letter is clear and easy to follow, contributing to a coherent and well-structured piece of writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating functional phrases such as 'express my interest', 'improve my employability', and 'utilize it efficiently'. There are minor unnatural collocations or word choices, such as 'The purpose of my writing today is...' which sounds slightly clunky compared to 'I am writing to express...', and 'mostly free that I really want to...'. However, these lexical choices do not impede communication. The vocabulary deployed allows the writer to convey their message clearly and maintain an appropriate formal tone suitable for a job or volunteer application.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
The student displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses like 'which I believe would be useful for this role' and 'because of my reliability and cooperation'. Grammatical control is generally good, and punctuation is handled correctly throughout. There are a few minor awkward constructions or slight errors, such as 'I am mostly free that I really want to utilize it efficiently', where the clause structure is slightly clumsy. Nonetheless, the majority of sentences are error-free, and grammar errors do not impede communication, demonstrating a solid command of sentence formation.
