Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary/unpaid job at the museum. I would like to volunteer as I am enrolled in the university persuing a PHD in History subject. Any hours put in the museum work would enormously become beneficial for me as this would allow to learn and know numerous articles of history.
I want to contribute a lot to the museum through my interpersonal skills and an immense knowledge of history. I have been taking part in history exhibitions where I introduce guests and students to myriad articles of ancient history. In addition to this, I have an exceptional organising skill that would definitely allow me to contribute a lot in the tidyness of the museum.
I would gladly like to start this work by the forthcoming week. The museum is not far from my residence allowing me a congenial commute via public transit.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Mohdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points outlined in the task instructions. First, the writer explains the motivation for volunteering by stating, 'I am enrolled in the university persuing a PHD in History subject,' linking it to learning history. Second, useful skills and qualities are described, mentioning 'interpersonal skills,' 'immense knowledge of history,' and 'exceptional organising skill' that help with exhibitions and tidiness. Finally, details of availability are provided with the statement, 'I would gladly like to start this work by the forthcoming week.' The purpose of the letter is clear, and all prompt requirements are covered appropriately for a general training letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The letter maintains a clear logical organization and progression throughout. Ideas are logically grouped into paragraphs, starting with the purpose, moving on to skills, availability, and closing appropriately. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'In addition to this' to introduce supporting points about organizational skills. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, separating the introduction, body points, and sign-off clearly. The relationship between sentences is generally logical, and referencing pronouns like 'this' or 'the museum' is managed well without causing confusion for the reader.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'interpersonal skills,' 'exhibitions,' 'residence,' and 'congenial.' However, there are some noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'persuing' (spelling error for pursuing), 'PHD in History subject' (redundant phrasing), and 'tidyness' (spelling error for tidiness). Despite these occasional slips and spelling errors, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning clearly without impeding communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over grammar with complex structures like 'Any hours put in the museum work would enormously become beneficial for me as this would allow to learn...' However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'allow to learn' (missing object pronoun), 'persuing' (spelling), and awkward verb placement in 'would enormously become beneficial.' Punctuation is generally fine, and the tone of the formal letter is maintained, but grammatical inaccuracies occur with enough frequency to prevent the score from reaching a higher band.
