Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in doing part-time voluntary/unpaid work at your museum. I saw an advertisement in the newspaper that my nearest museum is looking for people.

To commence with, I have keen interest in the history of museums from childhood. I would highly appreciate working at the museum to gain some sharp skills like communication skills and team-work. Moreover, I would also love to get an opportunity to know the work culture of museums. It would be great to gain some knowledgable experience.

In addition to, I have strong interaction skills and I am able to work in fast paced environment. I am goal oriented and I priortise my tasks accordingly. I believe these skills and qualities highly align for the role that you are looking for.

Moreover, I am part-time available as I have my french classes 3 days a week. However, I can adjust my class schedule hours according to the museum needs.

Thank you for giving time to consider my application and I would be particulary grateful if I get this opportunity to contribute.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhdeep Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all bullet points required by the task prompt. The writer clearly explains the motivation for wanting to work at the museum ('I have keen interest in the history of museums'), describes relevant skills and qualities ('strong interaction skills', 'able to work in fast paced environment'), and gives details of availability ('part-time available as I have my french classes 3 days a week'). The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a museum director. Although some ideas could be slightly more extended to reach the highest bands, all parts of the prompt are addressed clearly and relevantly, positioning this comfortably at a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised and progresses appropriately from the introduction to the motivation, skills, availability, and closing remarks. Paragraphing is used effectively, with distinct paragraphs for each part of the prompt. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'Moreover' and 'In addition to', though some transitions are a bit mechanical or used with minor grammatical friction (e.g., 'In addition to,' should ideally be 'In addition,' or 'In addition to this,'). Overall, the letter has a clear structure that makes it easy to follow, aligning well with the Band 6.0 and 7.0 descriptors.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary and collocations, such as 'fast paced environment', 'goal oriented', and 'contribute'. However, there are some noticeable vocabulary and collocation errors, such as 'gain some sharp skills' (instead of 'sharp', 'valuable' or 'practical' would be more natural) and 'knowledgable experience' (which is slightly awkward; 'valuable experience' would be better). Spelling is generally accurate, but some phrasing feels slightly unnatural. This matches the Band 6.0 descriptor, where vocabulary is adequate and attempts are made at less common items despite some inaccuracies.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'I would highly appreciate working at the museum to gain some sharp skills like communication skills and team-work.' There are several grammatical errors and prepositions issues, including 'I have keen interest' (missing article 'a'), 'highly align for the role' (should be 'align with'), 'part-time available' (awkward word order), and 'giving time to consider' (should be 'taking the time to consider'). Punctuation is generally fine, but these recurring minor inaccuracies place the grammar firmly in the Band 6 category, as they do not impede communication but prevent the text from achieving a higher level of accuracy.
