Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in pursuing the part-time voluntary work at your museum as recently advertised in the newspaper.

To start with, I have keen interest in the history field since childhood. I would appreciate working at the museum to gain some sharp oratory skills. Moreover, I would also love to get an opportunity to learn and know the work culture at museums. It would be enormously beneficial for me to gain such a knowledgable experience.

In addition to this, I thrive in such a fast paced environment. I am goal oriented and I prioritise my tasks accordingly. I firmly believe such a caliber of mine highly aligns with the role that you are looking for.

I am part-time available to work as I have my french classes 3 days a week. However, I can cordially adjust my class hours to meet the museum job needs.

Thank you for giving time to consider my application. I would be highly grateful to contribute a lot to the museum.

Yours faithfully,

Sukhdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response successfully covers all three bullet points required by the task. The student explains why they want to do voluntary work at the museum, noting their childhood interest in history and the desire to gain oratory skills and understand museum culture. They describe relevant skills and qualities, such as thriving in a fast-paced environment and being goal-oriented. Furthermore, they give details of their availability, explaining their current French classes and how they can adjust their schedule. Ideas are relevant and well-developed, with a clear position maintained throughout. The letter format is appropriately used, and the tone is polite and professional. Therefore, the response meets all the requirements for this criterion comfortably.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response is divided into logical paragraphs, each addressing a distinct part of the prompt, from the introduction to the reasons, skills, availability, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to this' are used to connect ideas, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing throughout the text remains clear. The overall structure follows standard formal letter conventions, ensuring that the reader can follow the writer's argument without confusion.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'oratory skills', 'goal oriented', and 'knowledgable experience' (though the latter contains a minor spelling slip). Word choice is generally appropriate for a formal application letter, but there are occasional lapses in collocation or precision, such as 'gain some sharp oratory skills' or 'cordially adjust my class hours'. Nevertheless, the vocabulary used allows the message to be communicated clearly and effectively without causing any misunderstanding for the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including structures like 'I firmly believe such a caliber of mine highly aligns with...' and conditional or concessive elements like 'However, I can cordially adjust my class hours...'. There are a few minor grammatical and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'keen interest in the history field' instead of 'history', and 'giving time to consider' rather than 'taking the time to consider'. Punctuation is generally sound, and errors are infrequent enough that they do not impede communication, showing a good level of control.
