Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary/unpaid work at the museum. I would like to volunteer as I am enrolled in the university pursuing a PHD in History field. Any hours put in the museum work would enormously become beneficial for me as this would allow to learn and know numerous articles of history.
I want to contribute a lot to the museum through my interpersonal skills and an immense knowledge of history. I have been taking part in history exhibitions where I introduce guests and students to myriad articles of ancient history. In addition to this, I have an exceptional organising skills that would definitely allow me to contribute a lot in the tidiness of the museum.
I would gladly like to start this work by the forthcoming week. The museum is not far from my residence allowing me a congenial commute via public transit.
I hope to hear from you soon.
Yours faithfully,
Mohdeep Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The student covers all bullet points of the prompt well. The letter successfully explains why the writer wants to do voluntary work at the museum, noting their PhD in History and the opportunity to interact with historical artefacts. It describes useful skills and qualities, mentioning interpersonal abilities, history exhibitions experience, and organisational skills. Finally, it provides clear availability starting by the forthcoming week. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. Ideas are well-developed and relevant, satisfying all requirements of the task. Therefore, this response meets the criteria for Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning, body paragraphs addressing distinct prompts, and a polite sign-off. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate introduction, body points, and conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'allowing me' are employed to connect ideas, though referencing and transitions could be slightly more fluid in places, such as the abrupt transition in the third paragraph regarding availability and commute. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow, aligning closely with the Band 7.0 descriptors.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'interpersonal skills', 'myriad articles', and 'congenial commute'. However, there are some imprecise collocations and awkward word choices, such as 'Any hours put in the museum work would enormously become beneficial' and 'an exceptional organising skills' (plural/article mismatch). While these minor errors in word choice and phrasing are present, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended message clearly without impeding communication, placing the response firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('that would definitely allow me') and participial phrases ('allowing me a congenial commute'). However, there are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'I am enrolled in the university pursuing a PHD in History field' (missing preposition/article issues), 'Any hours put in the museum work would enormously become beneficial' (awkward phrasing), and 'an exceptional organising skills' (disagreement between determiner and noun). These errors occur frequently enough to prevent a higher band, but they rarely impede overall communication, supporting a Band 6.0 score.
