Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary work at the museum. I would like to volunteer as I am enrolled in a university pursuing a PhD in History. Any hours put in in the museum work would enormously become beneficial for me as this would allow me to learn and know numerous articles of history.
I want to contribute a lot to the museum through my interpersonal skills and an immense knowledge of history. I have been taking part in history exhibitions where I introduce guests and students to myriad articles of ancient history. In addition to this, I have exceptional organising skills that would definitely allow me to contribute a lot to the tidiness of the museum.
I would gladly like to start this work by the forthcoming week. The museum is not far from my residence allowing me a congenial commute via public transit.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all three bullet points required in the prompt. First, the writer explains why they want to do voluntary work by stating they are pursuing a PhD in History and wish to learn more about historical articles. Second, useful skills and qualities are clearly described, including interpersonal skills, extensive knowledge of history, experience with history exhibitions, and exceptional organising skills. Third, details of availability are provided by stating they can start by the 'forthcoming week' and mentioning a convenient commute. All requirements are covered effectively and supported with relevant details, fulfilling the criteria for a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter has a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the bullet points in the prompt. The response opens with an appropriate greeting and closes with an appropriate sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition to this' and 'allowing me' are used to connect ideas effectively, although paragraph transitions and referencing are occasionally a bit mechanical. Overall paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, leading to a coherent overall arrangement that places this response comfortably at Band 7.0.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate to sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'pursuing', 'interpersonal skills', 'myriad articles', and 'congenial commute'. However, there are some minor awkwardness issues in word choice and collocation, such as 'Any hours put in in the museum work would enormously become beneficial' and 'learn and know numerous articles of history', where 'articles' is not the most natural term for historical items or exhibits. Despite these occasional inaccuracies, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey meaning clearly without impeding the reader, aligning well with the Band 6.5 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a good mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over structures such as participial phrases ('allowing me a congenial commute') and relative clauses. There are some minor grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, notably 'Any hours put in in the museum work would enormously become beneficial', which contains preposition repetition and slight lexical awkwardness. Punctuation is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. The majority of sentences are clear and well-formed, which fully supports a Band 6.5 score.
