Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my interest in pursuing a part-time voluntary work at your museum as recently advertised in the newspaper.
To start with, I have keen interest in the history field since childhood. I would appreciate working at the museum to gain some valuable oratory skills. Moreover, I would also love to get an opportunity to learn and know the work culture at museums. It would be enormously beneficial for me to gain such a knowledgable experience.
In addition to this, I thrive in such a fast paced environment. I am goal oriented and I prioritise my tasks accordingly. I firmly believe such a caliber of mine highly aligns with the role that you are looking for.
I am part-time available to work as I have my French classes 3 days a week. However, I can cordially adjust my class hours to meet the museum job needs.
Thank you for giving time to consider my application. I would be highly grateful to contribute a lot to the museum.
Yours faithfully,
Sukhdeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The candidate has successfully addressed all parts of the task prompt. First, the writer clearly explains why they want to do voluntary work at the museum, mentioning a childhood interest in history and a desire to gain oratory and cultural skills, as stated in phrases like 'I have keen interest in the history field since childhood.' Second, useful skills and qualities are adequately described, including thriving in a fast-paced environment and being 'goal oriented.' Third, availability is provided, noting part-time availability alongside French classes. The tone is appropriately formal for a letter to a museum director, and all bullet points are well-covered with relevant ideas. Therefore, a solid band score is warranted.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a distinct focus, moving smoothly from the purpose of writing in the introduction to reasons for applying, personal qualities, and finally availability. Cohesive devices such as 'To start with', 'Moreover', and 'In addition to this' are used appropriately to link ideas, although some transitions feel slightly standard or mechanical. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, and referencing is clear throughout the text, ensuring the reader can easily follow the candidate's message from start to finish.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate and generally appropriate range of vocabulary for the task. Less common lexical items are attempted, such as 'goal oriented', 'oratory skills', and 'fast paced environment'. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, for instance, writing 'voluntary work' instead of 'voluntary work' (though grammatically acceptable, 'volunteering' or 'volunteer work' is more natural), 'keen interest in the history field' rather than 'history', and 'knowledgable experience', which is awkward. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient for precision and does not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilising structures such as 'I would appreciate working at the museum to gain...' and 'However, I can cordially adjust my class hours to meet the museum job needs.' There are some minor grammatical errors and slightly unnatural phrasings, such as 'pursuing a part-time voluntary work' (where 'a' is unnecessary before uncountable work) and 'giving time to consider' instead of 'taking the time to consider'. Punctuation is generally correct, and sentences are mostly clear, meaning communication is never impeded.
