Student answer (Band 8.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my interest in the part-time voluntary position at your museum, which I recently learned is available to members of the local community. I would be delighted to contribute my time and skills to your organisation while gaining valuable experience in a cultural and educational environment.

I have always been fascinated by history, art and local heritage, and I believe volunteering at the museum would provide me with an excellent opportunity to broaden my knowledge while contributing to the community. I would particularly enjoy assisting visitors and helping them make the most of their experience at the museum.

I consider myself a responsible, approachable and organised individual with strong communication and interpersonal skills. I am comfortable interacting with people from diverse backgrounds and can explain information clearly and patiently. In addition, I am a quick learner, punctual and able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. These qualities would enable me to assist with welcoming visitors, providing basic information, organising exhibits and supporting other staff members when required.

Regarding my availability, I am able to volunteer on weekday evenings from 4:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and I am also available throughout the day on Saturdays. I can commit to approximately eight to ten hours per week and would be happy to discuss a schedule that best suits the museum's requirements.

Thank you for considering my application. I would welcome the opportunity to discuss the position further and look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Akash

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The candidate has fully and effectively addressed all parts of the task prompt. The letter begins by clearly explaining the motivation behind wanting to volunteer at the museum, noting a fascination with history, art, and local heritage. Furthermore, the writer provides a detailed account of useful personal skills and qualities, such as being responsible, approachable, organised, and a quick learner. Finally, the availability is clearly stated, specifying weekday evenings and Saturdays along with an estimate of eight to ten hours per week. The tone is appropriately formal and polite throughout, perfectly suited for a job application letter. Ideas are well-developed and all bullet points are covered thoroughly, matching the Band 8 criteria.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The response demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression from the opening statement to the final sign-off. Each paragraph has a distinct and clear focus: the first introduces the purpose of the letter, the second explains the motivation, the third details skills and qualities, and the fourth outlines availability. Cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'In addition', and 'Regarding my availability' are used appropriately and flexibly to guide the reader smoothly through the text. Paragraphing is used logically, ensuring that every idea is grouped effectively. The layout and transitional phrases meet the requirements for a high band score.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.5

The student uses a sufficient and wide range of vocabulary appropriate for a formal application letter. Less common items such as 'fascinated', 'interpersonal skills', 'diverse backgrounds', and 'commit' are integrated accurately and naturally. Collocations are generally strong, and word choice is precise, as seen in expressions like 'contribute my time and skills' and 'gain valuable experience'. There are no spelling errors, and the vocabulary allows the writer to convey precise meaning with ease, demonstrating solid command over lexical resources appropriate for Band 7.5 to 8.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The response features a wide range of complex grammatical structures, including relative clauses, participial phrases, and conditional-style preference phrasing ('would be happy to discuss'). The majority of sentences are completely error-free, and control over punctuation is excellent. The writer smoothly handles complex verb tenses and modal verbs ('would', 'can', 'am able to') without making errors. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled with precision throughout the letter, demonstrating strong grammatical control.
