Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir and Madam,
I saw your advertisement in newspaper that your are looking for people to do part-time unpaid work at the museum. I am interested in applying for this position.
I am a full-time student, studying history. I think not only does it enhances my academic knowledge, but also helps in improving my interpersonal skills such as team work, cooperation and communication skills.
I am a quick learner and can easily adapt to new environment. As I am a history student, I can help visitors by providing them an accurate information which they will be looking at. Moreover, I am good at computers with different softwares like microsoft office, so I can help in maintaining the records.
Next week, my summer break is going to be started, so I will be available any time from Monday to Friday between 9 A.M. to 5 P.M. Unfortunately, I am not available at weekends, because of my pre-booked family commitments.
Thank you for your time. I look forward to hearing from you.
Yours sincerely,
Navdeep Kahlon

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task. The writer clearly explains the motivation for volunteering by mentioning their background as a history student and the personal benefits they hope to gain. Relevant skills and qualities are also described, such as being a quick learner, possessing good interpersonal skills, and having computer proficiency with software like Microsoft Office. Furthermore, clear details regarding availability are provided, specifically Monday to Friday from 9 A.M. to 5 P.M., while appropriately noting the exclusion of weekends. All bullet points from the prompt are fully covered with relevant ideas.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter follows a logical organisation and progression. Each paragraph focuses on a distinct aspect of the prompt, ensuring the message is easy to follow. Appropriate paragraphing is used, starting with a standard opening and ending with a formal sign-off. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Next week', and 'Unfortunately' are employed effectively to link ideas, although referencing could occasionally be smoother. Overall, the layout and flow meet the expectations of a standard formal letter.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating less common items such as 'interpersonal skills', 'quick learner', and 'maintaining the records'. However, there are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasings, such as writing 'your are' instead of 'you are' in the opening and 'providing them an accurate information' (where 'an' is unnecessary with uncountable information). Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the intended message clearly and appropriately for a formal request.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, demonstrating a reasonable command of grammar. Examples such as 'I think not only does it enhances my academic knowledge, but also helps...' show attempts at inversion and complex coordination, though this specific sentence contains a verb error ('enhances' should be 'enhance' following the auxiliary 'does'). There are a few other minor errors, such as 'new environment' lacking a plural or article ('a new environment') and 'my summer break is going to be started' being overly passive. However, these errors do not impede communication.
