Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing to express my interest to work part-time at the museum on weekends. It may helpful to find a full time job in future if i add this experience in the resume.
My name is pranusha and I am pursuing graduation in accounting from york university. I have theoretical knowledge about bookkeeping and I had basic knowledge on few accounting softwares like xero, quickbooks from the college. Moreover, from youtube I learned how to process payroll, and how to file GST/HST returns. In my summer break, I worked in a company as customer representative for 4 months. Therefore, i had enough experience in interacting with the people. I strongly believe i will be right fit for the job in handling the museum documents and working as a customer representative.
I will be available on weekends to work and evening on the weekdays. I am happy to share if you need any further details about me. Appreciate your help and prompt response in this matter.
Best regards,
Pranusha

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all the bullet points outlined in the task instructions. The student clearly explains the motivation for volunteering, stating in the first paragraph, 'It may helpful to find a full time job in future if i add this experience in the resume.' Relevant skills and qualities are also described, highlighting accounting knowledge and customer service experience gained during summer work. Furthermore, availability is explicitly addressed in the third paragraph, noting that the writer is 'available on weekends to work and evening on the weekdays.' The letter adopts a semi-formal register appropriate for a job application letter and fulfils all communicative purposes effectively. Overall, the task is well handled, placing the response securely within the Band 6.5 to 7.0 range for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter exhibits a clear overall logical progression, moving naturally from the purpose of the letter to the applicant's background and finally to availability. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas, such as introduction, qualifications, and logistics. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features minor lapses in referencing. For instance, the transition 'Therefore, i had enough experience' feels slightly abrupt, and the pronoun referencing can occasionally be improved. Additionally, some basic cohesive devices like 'moreover' and 'therefore' are used, but the overall toolkit remains relatively straightforward. Despite these minor limitations, the letter is coherent and easy to follow throughout, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a workplace application, incorporating topic-specific terms such as 'bookkeeping', 'accounting softwares', 'payroll', and 'customer representative'. However, there are noticeable limitations and inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing. For instance, the expression 'express my interest to work' should standardly be 'express my interest in working', and 'right fit for the job' lacks a pre-determiner ('the right fit'). Furthermore, basic spelling and capitalization errors occur, such as lowercase 'i' used independently throughout the text and lowercase letters for proper nouns like 'york university', 'xero', and 'quickbooks'. These errors do not impede communication, placing the vocabulary use firmly at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating the ability to construct multi-clause sentences such as 'In my summer break, I worked in a company as customer representative for 4 months.' However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly regarding missing articles ('find a full time job', 'as customer representative', 'right fit for the job') and verb form inaccuracies ('It may helpful' instead of 'It may be helpful'). Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, with frequent failure to capitalize the pronoun 'I'. While these grammatical slips and mechanical errors are noticeable and occur regularly, they do not obscure the intended meaning, which aligns closely with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
