Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter regarding the voluntary workers you need for the museum.
I have been visiting the museum for the past many years and I have learnt several things about the history of the town from the pictures and old equipments kept in the museum. Hence, I have decided to help with the important renovations so that the youger generation can also learn from the museum.
I am a painter with four years of exeperience. I can paint the museum carefully as it is an old bulding. I have studied at the university about the usage of different colors according to the environment around. Therefore, my skills can be useful in the renovation.
I have a part-time job, but I am always free on the weekends and I do not have any vacation plans this summer. I would appreciate it if I could get an opportunity to contribute in this community work.
Thank you for your time and for considering my request.
Yours faithfully,
Rajwinder Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response effectively covers all parts of the task prompt. First, the writer explains the motivation for wanting to do voluntary work at the museum, citing a long-standing connection to the institution and a desire to help the younger generation learn. Second, useful skills and qualities are clearly described, noting four years of experience as a painter and university study regarding color usage in environments. Third, availability is explicitly stated, mentioning weekends and a lack of summer vacation plans. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director. Ideas are well-developed and directly address the requirements, aligning well with the Band 7 level descriptors.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter exhibits a clear overall structure, opening with a standard salutation and progressing logically through the required points in separate paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to distinguish between the reason for applying, the relevant skills, and availability. Cohesive devices such as 'Hence', 'Therefore', and 'I am writing this letter regarding' are utilized to connect ideas, though some transitions feel slightly basic. Overall organisation is coherent and guides the reader smoothly from the introduction to the sign-off, fulfilling the criteria for Band 7.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate and appropriate for the task, with terms like 'voluntary workers', 'renovations', 'environment', and 'contribute'. However, there are a few spelling and lexical inaccuracies, such as 'equipments' (equipment is uncountable), 'youger' (younger), and 'exeperience' (experience). The range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning with some precision, but the presence of noticeable spelling errors and slightly repetitive phrasing prevents the score from reaching a higher band. It comfortably sits at a Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and subordinate structures such as 'so that the younger generation can also learn from the museum' and 'I would appreciate it if I could get an opportunity'. Grammatical control is generally good, though there is a minor article slip in 'the youger generation' and 'the museum' where 'a museum' might be more natural initially. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well throughout. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, and complex structures are attempted with reasonable success, earning a solid Band 6.5.
