Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all parts of the prompt in this general training letter. First, the writer explains why they want to do voluntary work, mentioning recent relocation and a passion for history. Second, they describe useful skills and qualities, noting past volunteer experience at a culture fair, good communication skills, calmness under pressure, and punctuality. Finally, details of availability are provided, stating availability on weekday mornings while keeping weekends free. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director, though there are some personal details included that are slightly informal. Overall, the requirements of Task 1 are fully addressed, warranting a solid band score for this criterion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a generally coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical letter format starting with an appropriate salutation and ending with a sign-off. Paragraphing is used to separate different points, such as the reason for volunteering, past experience, and availability. However, cohesive devices are sometimes mechanical or lacking, and referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'Any duties asigned to me I work dedicately and honestly.' The transitions between sentences could be smoother to enhance readability and logical progression. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear enough for the reader to follow without difficulty.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully communicating personal background, motivations, and availability. There are several spelling errors and typos throughout the text, such as 'voluntear' instead of 'volunteer', 'move' instead of 'moved', 'vountear' instead of 'volunteer', 'fare' instead of 'fair', 'cirumstances' instead of 'circumstances', 'puctual' instead of 'punctual', 'dedicately' instead of 'dedicatedly', 'moring' instead of 'morning', 'elpore' instead of 'explore', 'curently' instead of 'currently', and 'possive' instead of 'positive'. While these errors are frequent, they do not severely impede overall communication. The vocabulary remains fairly basic with some attempts at less common items like 'passion' or 'dedicately'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Not only that but I also have some past experience of as a vountear.' Grammatical accuracy is inconsistent, with frequent errors in punctuation, tense consistency, and prepositions. For example, 'I just move from Mehsana for my study project' should use the past tense 'moved', and 'working in the museum... give me a happiness' contains subject-verb agreement errors ('gives me happiness'). Punctuation errors are also present, such as missing commas or unnecessary ones like 'inform you that, I am'. Complex structures often contain mistakes, though simple sentences are generally understandable and communication is rarely impeded.
