Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing this regarding to avail a part-time voluntary work opportunity at the museum.

I got plenty of spare time in the weekdays, that I want to utilize in a productive way. I believe this is a right time to pay back to the community. Also, I have interest in history and I fond of seeing historical ornaments closely.

By profession, I am a writer at a magazine called "Panjab Now" and speaking is one of my hobbies. According to me, I can contribute in writing articles, telling visitors the stories behind the pictures and sculptures at the museum as a guide.

As per my schedule, I finish my office work at 2pm daily in the weekdays. So, I can dedicate four hours in the evening from 4pm till the closing hours that is 8pm. Moreover, I can come on weekends as well, If needed. My joining would be immediately.

I am looking forward for you reply.

Yours faithfully,

Zorawar.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate successfully covers all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the desire to do voluntary work is explained through having spare time and an interest in history. Second, relevant skills and qualities are described, mentioning the candidate's profession as a magazine writer and hobbies involving speaking and historical items. Third, specific details regarding work availability are provided, including exact weekday hours and weekend flexibility. The tone is appropriate for a letter to a director, although the salutation uses 'Dear Sir,' instead of the required 'Dear Sir or Madam,' from the prompt. Despite this slight deviation, the task is well addressed overall.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organized into clear paragraphs, each addressing a distinct aspect of the prompt. Ideas logically progress from the purpose of the letter to personal motivation, skills, and availability. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Also,' 'By profession,' and 'Moreover,' though some transitions feel a bit mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Referencing is generally clear, and the overall arrangement allows the reader to follow the message easily without confusion.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, with some attempts at less common items such as 'voluntary work opportunity,' 'productive way,' and 'sculptures.' However, there are notable collocation and phrasing errors. For example, the opening phrase 'regarding to avail' is unnatural and incorrect, and the expression 'I fond of' lacks the verb 'am.' Other minor inaccuracies occur, but the vocabulary remains sufficient to communicate the writer's intentions clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as conditional clauses ('If needed') and time clauses. There are several grammatical errors present, such as 'I got plenty of spare time in the weekdays' (should be 'on the weekdays'), 'this is a right time' (should be 'the right time'), and 'looking forward for you reply' (should be 'to your reply'). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout the letter.
