Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing in response of your advertisement for part-time voluntary work at your museum. My name is Nitin, I live just two blocks away from the museum, and I frequent to this place. I would like to apply for this unpaid work.

I am interested for doing this unpaid work because I have a summer vacation starting from next week and I happy to utilise my free time in doing something productive. I always wanted to work in the museum as this would be an amazing experience and also distinct from any other regular works.

I am studying finace and I would appreciate if you would offer me some work in this area as I have a good knowledge and experience. Moreover, I can help museum in managing accounts and can also be able to support handling visitor records. This experience would help me gain more confidence and would also give me sense of gratitude for helping the museum.

I will be available from next week and I would prefer morning time as I have my sports lessons during evenings. I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Nitin Chavda

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student has successfully covered all parts of the task prompt. First, the writer explains the motivation for doing voluntary work, citing a upcoming summer vacation and a desire to do something productive. Second, useful skills and qualities are clearly described, notably studying finance and offering to manage accounts and visitor records. Third, details of availability are provided, stating that work can begin next week and specifying a preference for morning shifts due to evening sports lessons. The letter adopts an appropriate formal tone suitable for addressing a museum director, and all bullet points from the prompt are fully and clearly addressed without any omissions. Therefore, this response meets all criteria for a strong band score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter is logically organised with a clear beginning and ending. The response is divided into four distinct paragraphs, each serving a specific communicative purpose, such as introducing the purpose of the letter, explaining the motivation, detailing specific skills, and stating availability. Cohesive devices are generally used effectively, such as 'Moreover' in the third paragraph to add supporting points, and temporal markers like 'from next week'. However, there are minor cohesion and referencing flaws, such as 'frequent to this place' and 'interested for doing', which slightly disrupt the flow. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas clearly.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common collocations and topic-related terms such as 'voluntary work', 'advertisement', 'productive', and 'visitor records'. However, there are notable word choice and preposition errors, such as writing 'in response of' instead of 'in response to', 'frequent to this place' instead of 'frequent this place' or 'visit this place frequently', and 'interested for doing' instead of 'interested in doing'. Spelling is generally accurate, with the exception of 'finace' instead of 'finance'. While these lexical errors occur, they do not impede overall communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The student employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including conditional or relative clauses such as 'I would appreciate if you would offer me some work' and 'skills and qualities... that would be useful'. There are several grammatical errors and awkward phrasings present throughout the text, including 'I happy to utilise' (missing verb 'am'), 'distinct from any other regular works' (uncountable noun 'work'), and 'can also be able to support' (redundant modal verb combination). Despite these errors, punctuation is generally correct, and the meaning remains clear to the reader without significant misinterpretation.
