Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to apply for the part-time voluntary position at your museum. I have always been interested in history, culture, and learning about how people lived in the past. I believe that working at your museum would be a valuable experience and would allow me to develop my communication and organisational skills while contributing to the local community.

I am a friendly, responsible, and hardworking person. I can communicate confidently with visitors and enjoy helping people. I am also good at working in a team and can follow instructions carefully. In addition, I am comfortable using computers, which could be useful for administrative tasks or helping to organise information.

I am available to work on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. I can also work on weekday evenings after 5 p.m. if required. I would be happy to discuss my availability further.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Bilal Sabir

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The candidate has successfully addressed all three bullet points required in the task instructions. First, the purpose of the letter is clearly stated, and the motivation to do voluntary work is explained through an interest in history and culture. Second, relevant skills and qualities such as being friendly, responsible, hardworking, and comfortable using computers are well described. Finally, specific details regarding availability on weekends and weekday evenings are provided. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a museum director, and all ideas are relevant and adequately developed to fulfil the task requirements effectively, fitting comfortably within Band 7 descriptors.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5

The letter exhibits a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. Each paragraph serves a distinct purpose corresponding to the bullet points in the prompt. For example, the opening establishes the purpose, the second paragraph details skills, the third outlines availability, and the final paragraph provides a polite closing. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition' are used appropriately to link ideas without being obtrusive. Paragraphing is handled logically and sufficiently, making the letter easy to follow and ensuring smooth transitions between thoughts.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary with adequate flexibility and precision for the task. Words and phrases such as 'voluntary position', 'organisational skills', 'contributing to the local community', and 'administrative tasks' show a good command of common and semi-formal lexical items suited to a job or volunteer application. While it lacks some of the more sophisticated uncommon lexical items that characterise higher bands, the vocabulary is used accurately and naturally without any noticeable errors in word choice or collocation.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5

The response features a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'I believe that working at your museum would be a valuable experience and would allow me to develop my communication...' and 'I am available to work on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.' Grammatical accuracy is very high throughout the text, with the vast majority of sentences being completely error-free. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are managed correctly, demonstrating strong control over grammar and syntax appropriate for a Band 8 level.
