Student answer (Band 4.5)
Dear Sir/Madam
I am writing this letter regarding the museum is looking for people to do part-time voluntary work. I am young, enthaustic and energetic person. When I saw the post for vacancy I was soo excited to work in the museum because I can learn the different skills, also chance to grow my confidence and experience in working different fields. However, this is a volunteer job but I would like to give my time for the development of working skills in different filed.
To be honest I don't have experience in working for similar kind of job. Despite of similar experience although I have learn different skills and got training in others field like I was teacher at school and I also worked as a instructor in warehouse where I trained new employees.
So,I would like to request to join in your museum as a staff.
your sincerely

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The response addresses the task only minimally. While the student touches upon the three bullet points, the coverage is basic and lacks sufficient development. For instance, the explanation of why you want to do voluntary work is limited to general statements like 'learn the different skills', without connecting them specifically to the museum context. Similarly, the skills and qualities mentioned, such as being an 'enthaustic and energetic person' and having past experience as a teacher and warehouse instructor, are presented with very limited detail. Details of availability are entirely missing from the response, as the student mentions past work experience rather than stating when they are available to work at the museum. The format of a formal letter is attempted, but the overall development falls short of fully answering all parts of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
Information and ideas are presented, but the overall progression lacks clarity and logical sequencing. The letter is poorly structured into cohesive paragraphs, with the body paragraphs jumbling together reasons, background skills, and a repeated request. Transitional and cohesive devices are inadequate and sometimes inaccurate, such as using 'However, this is a volunteer job but...' which creates confusion rather than smoothly connecting ideas. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as the abrupt shift from discussing past roles to requesting a staff position. Paragraphing is not used effectively to separate distinct topics like motivation, skills, and availability, resulting in a text that feels disjointed and difficult to follow logically throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'voluntary', 'development', and 'instructor', but there are noticeable errors in word choice, word form, and spelling that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. For example, 'enthaustic' is a spelling error for enthusiastic, and phrases like 'working different fields' and 'similar kind of job' demonstrate awkward phrasing and collocation. There is also repetition of basic words like 'work', 'skills', and 'experience'. While the meaning can generally be deciphered, the lexical range lacks the precision and flexibility needed to score higher, and frequent minor errors constrain the overall vocabulary score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in complex structures and basic grammatical patterns. There are notable issues with verb tenses, articles, and prepositions inside grammatical patterns, such as 'regarding the museum is looking', 'When I saw the post for vacancy', and 'experience in working for similar kind of job'. Furthermore, sentences like 'Despite of similar experience although I have learn different skills' contain redundant conjunctions and incorrect prepositions. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent, as seen in the opening and closing salutations. These frequent grammatical errors occur across simple and complex forms alike and can cause some difficulty for the reader.
