Student answer (Band 5.5)
Dear Sir/Madam,
I am writing this letter on the behalf of volunteer work that you advertised on Himalayan post.
I want to work as volunteer at the museum despite being unpaid I would like to contribute for the local community. And also I will get the opportunity to learn different skills and know about so many historical things. However, I don't have relevant experience although I can contribute for the museum.
For instance, I had gained experience in multiples filed worked as a teacher, worked as instructor in amazon warehouse where I trained new employees. And I have good computer skills for example, Ms-word, Excel, Ms-powerpoint etc. I can record the entrance of people who visit, data entry and management of museum.
I available in every weekends.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, as it explains why you want to do voluntary work, describes your skills and qualities, and gives details of your availability. However, your ideas are somewhat limited and under-developed. For instance, your explanation of why you want to volunteer touches on contributing to the local community and learning new skills, but these points are not fully extended. Additionally, your response falls below the required length of 150 words, containing only 127 words, which means the word count requirement is not met and restricts the fullness of your development. To reach a higher level, you should ensure you meet the minimum word count and expand each bullet point with more detailed examples and explanations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure starting with a standard greeting and moving through your motivations, skills, and availability. You use some basic cohesive devices, such as 'For instance' and 'And also', although referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical or repetitive. Paragraphing is used to separate your main ideas, with distinct sections for your motivations and your qualifications, which helps the reader follow your letter easily. To move to a higher band, you would need to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that transitions between sentences and paragraphs flow more naturally without relying on simple connectors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You demonstrate a limited but minimally adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms such as 'volunteer work', 'local community', and 'data entry'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and word form issues throughout the text. For example, writing 'on the behalf of volunteer work' instead of 'in response to the volunteer advertisement', and 'multiples filed' instead of 'multiple fields'. You also make spelling and punctuation slips, such as 'Ms-word' and 'Ms-powerpoint'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher score, you should incorporate a broader range of less common lexical items with greater precision and check your word forms and collocations carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex or compound forms, such as 'I want to work as volunteer at the museum despite being unpaid I would like to contribute...'. There are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that can cause difficulty for the reader, including missing articles ('as volunteer', 'in every weekends'), incorrect prepositions, run-on sentences with missing punctuation, and awkward verb tenses ('I had gained experience in multiples filed worked as a teacher'). To improve your grammar score, you need to use a wider variety of complex sentence structures with good control, ensuring that your verb tenses, articles, and sentence boundaries are accurate.
